For mending this dress I have used traditional darning techniques as well as embroidery stitches (cross-stitch and running stitch). It was hard to decide how to do it because the rip was in such a conspicuous spot so I went for this "fantasy darning", a mix of things. I didn't want it to look too patched nor to show it's actually mended. Now the sad thing is I have just found another rip next to the hem. Damn, this dress is disintegrating!

ahh i wouldn't expect less from you, absolutely perfect!
Amazing! It is a piece of art!
Absolutely precioso. Almost a gift, that rip in the fabric.
Beautiful Karen, I really like it!
Thank you! So happy to hear you like how it turned out!
Gracias chicas!
I love the bright yellow touch to it. Most rips should be fixed in the same way.
Oh wow... you know, Karen, you have made this dress BETTER than before! It is absolutely gorgeous! Can you do a tutorial on how you did this, please please please?! :) Kx
que seca! sin palabras Saludos
Hello Karen, it's always such fun to drop by your site and see what's going on.
Congratulations on that Nylon article...you are getting global attention and it's well deserved.
Your clever decorative mending techniques are terrific. Now your dress is definitely a one of a kind.
I work near a super yarn/fabric shop called Purl Soho. You might know of their web site. Anyhow, they now have some DMC white embroidery thread that actually glows in the dark! Think of the possibilities...I know I am. xo
i totally love it! i would wear that mending with pride
That darning makes that dress even more gorgeous.
oh so beautiful! Who can imagine this was mended...
THANK YOU people!
Kylie – I'll see if I can make a tutorial with such a tiny technique!
I knew it would be amazing! I love it.
That is the most beautiful patch I have ever seen.
your stitching is absolutely exquisite and adorns the dress so beautifully.I'd love a little insight into how you did it!

I can only echo what everyone else has said... that is so beautiful. (and yes, I'd love to know how you did it ;o)
Karen, this is so beautiful. Wearable art!
The dress is more beautiful than before the rip. I love your work x
This is beautifully done. I'm very inspired to darn rather than patch things now!
Uaaauuuuu!!! Es increíble!! Qué manos tienes! Felicidades! n_n

wow, that looks beautiful! I actually like it better than before it got the tear in it. very inspiring. :)
I am going to make a post in my blog about creative mending. Can I refer to your post?

Can't even tell it was a hole. Looks like someone's luxe logo a la Ralph Lauren or Izod. Dress before - meh. Dress now - interesting. Came to you via Hello Pork Chop. N
hola karen.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful work. I am doing a City and Guilds Textiles course and you are one of my inspirational artists! This mending technique reminds me of the Japanese craft concept of kintsugi, which both uses gold/precious metal to highlight repair (in pottery), but which also views breakage and repair as part of an objects history, rather than something to be disguised xx
